The measurements that matter are temperature split across the indoor coil, static pressure across the system, capacitance on every run capacitor, amperage draw on the compressor and fan motors, and superheat or subcooling compared against the manufacturer's target for the actual conditions on the day.
Those figures go on a record that stays with the system. A compressor drawing marginally more amperage than last year, or a temperature split narrowing by two degrees, is early warning that costs nothing to note and a great deal to ignore. Maintenance without measurement is just cleaning.
Maintenance is priced per visit, with a lower rate on a scheduled twice-yearly arrangement than on ad hoc calls. The genuine saving is not the visit price, it is catching a forty dollar capacitor before it becomes a call-out on the coldest night of the year.
