New heat pumps no longer ship with R-410A. The industry has moved to a class of refrigerants designated A2L, principally R-454B and R-32, with substantially lower global warming potential. This changes some things about how equipment is installed and serviced, and it changes the arithmetic on whether to repair or replace an older system. Here is what is actually different, without the alarmism that has attached itself to the word flammable.
The A2L designation means lower toxicity and mild flammability. These refrigerants require a substantial ignition source and concentration to burn at all, and they are used safely in millions of systems. The classification changes handling procedures rather than making equipment dangerous.
R-410A, which has been the standard refrigerant in residential heat pumps and air conditioners for around two decades, has a high global warming potential. Under the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons driven by the American Innovation and Manufacturing Act and parallel international agreements, production and import of high global warming potential refrigerants is being progressively reduced.
The practical consequence for equipment manufacturers was a deadline. New residential systems manufactured for the current market use refrigerants with substantially lower global warming potential, which in practice means the A2L class. This is not an optional upgrade or a marketing position, it is a regulatory transition that the entire industry has moved through together.
Refrigerants are classified by toxicity and flammability. The letter indicates toxicity, with A meaning lower toxicity. The number indicates flammability, running from 1 for no flame propagation up to 3 for higher flammability. The L suffix denotes a lower burning velocity within class 2.

A2L sits one step up from the A1 class that R-410A occupied. These refrigerants will burn under specific conditions, requiring both a substantial concentration and a genuine ignition source, and they have a low burning velocity which means combustion does not propagate readily. They are used safely in enormous numbers of systems worldwide. The classification is a reason for revised handling procedures, not a reason for concern about the equipment in your house.
R-454B has become the most common replacement for R-410A in North American residential equipment. It is a blend, which has one practical consequence worth knowing: blended refrigerants must be charged as liquid rather than vapour, because charging as vapour changes the composition of what actually enters the system.
R-32 is a single component refrigerant used by several manufacturers, particularly in ductless equipment. Being a single component rather than a blend, it can be charged as vapour and it does not fractionate if a leak occurs. Both have substantially lower global warming potential than R-410A and both are A2L classified.
For a homeowner, very little about living with an A2L system is different. The changes are almost entirely on the contractor's side, and they are worth understanding because they affect who can competently service your equipment.
When choosing a contractor for a new system, it is entirely reasonable to ask whether their technicians are trained for A2L refrigerants and whether their service equipment is A2L rated. A contractor still working exclusively with A1 equipment cannot properly service the system they are selling you.
If your current system uses R-410A, it continues to work exactly as it did. Nothing about the transition requires you to replace working equipment, and there is no deadline by which existing systems must be changed.
What does change is the economics of keeping an older system running. As production of high global warming potential refrigerants is reduced, the supply of R-410A tightens and the price rises. Reclaimed refrigerant remains available and will for some time, but the trend in cost is upward and it is not going to reverse.
The practical consequence is on the repair or replace decision. A system with a significant refrigerant leak, where the repair is expensive and the recharge quantity is large, faces a different calculation now than it did five years ago. That does not mean replace everything, and we are not going to tell you it does. It means the refrigerant cost belongs in the comparison, and we will put it there when we give you the numbers.
Some contractors still hold R-410A equipment as remaining stock, occasionally offered at a discount. That equipment works and it is not defective, but you are buying a system that will need a refrigerant with a tightening supply and a rising price for the next fifteen to twenty years.
Whether the discount justifies that depends on how long you intend to keep the system and how large the discount actually is. We will tell you plainly when we are offering old stock and why, rather than presenting it as equivalent. What we will not do is let you buy it without knowing.
For most people buying now, current A2L equipment is the sensible choice, and the servicing considerations are the contractor's problem rather than yours. The one thing worth confirming is that whoever installs it is properly equipped and trained to service it afterwards.
