What actually matters on an installation

The parts of an installation that determine how long the system lasts are mostly finished before the panels go back on.

  • Manual J load calculation performed on the house, not estimated from the old equipment
  • Brazing done under flowing nitrogen so the inside of the pipe does not oxidise
  • System evacuated to 500 microns and held, with the decay test documented
  • Refrigerant charge weighed in rather than set by pressure and feel

Nitrogen purging during brazing is invisible in the finished job and matters enormously. Without it, brazing copper produces a black flaking oxide scale on the inside of the pipe, and that scale eventually travels into the compressor and the metering device. It is the kind of shortcut nobody can see on handover day and everybody pays for in year six. We do it on every joint and we are happy to be watched doing it.

The usual approach

Size the new system to match whatever came out, braze the joints in open air, charge until the pressures look about right and leave.

How we do it

Calculate the actual load, braze under nitrogen, pull a documented deep vacuum with a decay test, and weigh the charge in against the manufacturer's figure.

Sizing and equipment selection for a new installation

Manual J is a room by room heat loss and heat gain calculation using the actual construction of your house: insulation levels, window area and orientation, air leakage, and Spokane's design conditions. It produces a number in BTU per hour rather than a tonnage guess, and it is common for the result to be meaningfully smaller than the equipment being replaced, because older systems were routinely oversized.

Manual S then selects equipment against that load using the manufacturer's expanded performance data at the relevant outdoor temperatures. This is the step that gets skipped most often, and it is the one that determines whether the system holds capacity when Spokane drops to 5°F. Both documents go to you with the finished job.

What separates a good job from an average one

Before we arrive to install your heat pump

Installation day involves moving substantial equipment in and out, plus electrical and refrigerant work at both ends of the system.

  1. Clear a continuous path from the driveway to the indoor equipment location, including stair landings and doorways.
  2. Clear three feet of working space around the outdoor unit position and remove anything stored on the existing pad.
  3. Make sure the electrical panel is accessible and clear of storage, since the circuit and disconnect are part of the work.
  4. Plan for the heating or cooling to be off for most of the day, and arrange accordingly if anyone in the house is temperature sensitive.
  5. Keep pets secured away from both the indoor work area and the yard, as doors stay open while equipment is moved.

How long does a heat pump installation take?
One to two days for a typical residential system where the equipment location is not changing and the ductwork is serviceable. Adding electrical capacity, modifying duct or relocating equipment extends that, and we tell you which applies before you commit.
Do you really do a load calculation, or estimate from my old system?
We run an actual Manual J and you receive it with the job. Sizing from the outgoing equipment simply repeats whatever mistake was made last time, and older systems in Spokane were commonly oversized, so that error tends to compound.
What does evacuating the system to 500 microns achieve?
It removes moisture and non-condensable gases from inside the refrigerant circuit. Moisture left in the system reacts with the refrigerant and oil to form acids that attack the compressor windings over time. It is a slow failure that shows up years later, which is why the step gets skipped.
Do I need to be present while you install my heat pump?
