Ductless heads are sized to the room, not the house, and oversizing is the classic mistake. An oversized head satisfies the thermostat quickly, shuts down and leaves the room with poor humidity control in summer and uneven temperatures in winter. Because inverter-driven equipment is most efficient in its mid range, a head that is modestly sized and runs long beats one that is generously sized and cycles.

We calculate the load for the specific room including its window area, orientation and how well it is connected to the rest of the house. A bonus room over a garage with three exterior surfaces behaves very differently from an interior bedroom of the same square footage, and a rule of thumb per square foot cannot see that difference.

What separates a good job from an average one

  • Flare connections are where ductless systems leak. They need the correct flaring tool, a torque wrench and a nitrogen pressure test, not a wrench and a feel for it.
  • The system has to be pulled into a deep vacuum and held there before the charge is released, because moisture left in the line set becomes acid inside the compressor.
